Communication in Cross-Cultural Context

Bholanath Dutta* The influence of traditions on connection is so strong that anthropologist Edward Lounge says, " Culture can be communication and communication is culture”. Variations in cultural principles and perceptions can be a peaceful and unseen source of wonderful misunderstanding among people. In the current gloablized industry, where there is actually a free movement of recruiting across physical boundaries, across various nationalities, it has become imperative to understand the value of intercultural communication procedure. Against this background, this newspaper discusses the various issues and challenges in cross-cultural interaction.

‘Culture' has typically been described in simplified terms because life-style of men and women of a community. But traditions means far more; it includes various attitudinal and behavioral dimensions including values, beliefs, expectations, rules, etc . Each one of these make tradition a complex thing to understand and has driven the attention of researchers to study the various dimensions of lifestyle and its effect in the people living within just that tradition. Within a culture there may be numerous sub-cultures on such basis as ethnic groups, religious groups, professions, and so forth, and variations exist included in this. Many studies simply by behavioral researchers prove that every one of the people who are part of a particular tradition have likeness in their pondering and patterns. Culture may differ from one group to another and these variations can affect the degree of trust and openness in communication that one can achieve with people of other cultures. Therefore, understanding cross-cultural communication is very important. Cross-cultural communication is becoming more and more relevant in today's borderless world. People are shifting freely in one country to a different on business assignments, as well as for leisure and entertainment. Consequently , there is a necessity of understanding additional cultures. Here is an example of how social differences can affect the trust level and open interaction: An American and a Chinese were going to a cemetery where their friends was buried. The American was carrying a beautiful bunch of blossoms to put on his friend's severe. The Oriental was holding a bowl of cooked rice and some fruits. The American found this ridiculous that a person would keep food for a severe. " You may not think, ” asked the American, barely hiding his contempt, " that the dead friend will come and eat the foodstuff you keep at the severe? ” " Yes, of course , ” retorted the stunned Chinese after a moment's temporarily stop, " My pal will come and eat the meals around the time your friend comes out to smell the flowers most likely leaving intended for him. ” It was a friendly dig at each other's traditions. It grew from the problems the American had understand the Chinese language custom. Fortunately, for the 2, the ethnical differences would not threaten all their friendship. However , one's traditions can be a main block, specially in international communication. A person's quest starts in one's individual culture. Being a person grows up, he imbibes various beliefs, beliefs and norms which are inherited/practiced for the reason that culture. Traditions perceives and teaches right after between negative and positive. It identifies the behavior with the people for the reason that culture.
